Earlier this year my wonderful Granny, Faith Garson passed away. In July we went to stay at the house she designed in Ireland for a memorial service in the village where she was born. I had a little time one evening to sketch the kitchen window. For me, it is a snapshot which encapsulates the feel of the house which is now, sadly, for sale. When I was a child, Granny used to try and teach me the ways of watercolour, painting the spires of Oxford from her garden bench. Alas, I fear I wasn't a very attentive student, and she would say of my work that the colours were often too brash and not natural enough (due to my lack of patience) - potentially an apt criticism of this sketch! All the same, I don't know if I would still be sketching today if it were not for her efforts and encouragement, and for all the paintbrushes she bought me over the years.
